Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA)
The Registrar's Office maintains a file on each enrolled student. Student files contain correspondence and communication that takes place between the student, the university and the public. Information within the file is maintained according to the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) of 1974, as amended.
This act, with which this institution intends to comply fully, was designated to protect the privacy of education records, to establish records and to provide guidelines for the correction of inaccurate or misleading data through informal and formal hearings.
Students also have the right to file complaints with FERPA concerning alleged failures by the institution to comply with the act.
ORU hereby designates the following categories of student information as public or "Directory Information". Such information may be disclosed by the institution for any purpose, at its discretion.
- Category I: Name, dates of attendance, classification
- Category II Major field of study, awards, honors, degree(s) conferred (including dates)
- Category III: Past and present participation in officially recognized sports and activities, physical factors (height, weight) of athletes, date and place of birth
- Category IV: Grade reports to parents or guardians of undergraduate students
Students' Grades
Students' grades are accessible via the web at the end of each semester. It is the student's responsibility to seek correction for any error. Failure on the student's part to seek correction within one year after the conclusion of the semester the course was taken indicates that records are accurate as stated.
Dependent and Independent Status
Federal law permits educational institutions to disclose academic and financial information to the parents of financially dependent children. Effective fall 2002 undergraduate students will declare "Dependent" or "Independent" status as part of the registration process. Students are assumed as "indepedent" as it pertains to their academic and financial information. Parents may obtain non-directory information (grades, GPA, etc.) only at the discretion of the institution and after their child has declared themselves as dependent.
Parents may also obtain non-directory information by obtaining a signed consent from their child.
Transfer Institution Transcripts
All transcripts received by ORU are property of ORU and will not be duplicated or released. Students needing copies of transfer institution transcripts must contact that school to obtain copies.
