Program Overview

Love kids? Love traveling and want to teach English for an international school? The College of Education offers you the unique opportunity to graduate in four years with dual certification in English and English language learner education. A Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.) in English in the Global Classroom prepares you to teach English as a foreign language domestically and internationally, and also enables you to teach middle school English in the United States. Since English has become the international language for areas such as business and culture, teachers are in high demand across the globe. Upon completion of the program, graduates have the opportunity to apply for certification. Applicants must complete the program, all key assessments and benchmarks included in the program, be admitted to the Professional Education Program, and pass the designated certification exams required by the state of Oklahoma. Because Oklahoma participates in the NASDTEC Interstate Agreement, candidates are eligible to transfer their teaching certificate to other member states, pending that state’s specific requirements. Since this degree is designed for the international classroom, graduates will have many opportunities to teach and live abroad!

micro-credential in the science of reading

PED 307 – Secondary Literacy Intervention is a 16-week micro-credential course that is part of a comprehensive program of study designed to prepare teacher candidates to support adolescent readers in grades 4 through 12. The course is grounded in the science of reading and aligned with the expectations of Oklahoma’s Strong Readers Act (SB 362), ensuring that secondary educators understand how to identify and address reading challenges in content-area classrooms. Instruction focuses on key components such as phonemic awareness, decoding, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension, with attention to how these elements apply to older students who may need targeted intervention. Candidates will work with literacy screening tools, interpret assessment data, and develop strategies to support students who struggle with reading, including those with characteristics of dyslexia. Through a structured pre-clinical experience, candidates apply these strategies in secondary classroom settings. Upon successful completion, participants will earn a digital badge through Credly, demonstrating their readiness to implement evidence-based literacy practices that meet the diverse needs of secondary learners.
