micro-credentials in science of reading

Oral Roberts University offers two focused micro-credentials in the science of reading that equip future and current educators with the tools to implement evidence-based literacy instruction aligned with Oklahoma’s Strong Readers Act (SB 362). Designed for both elementary and secondary educators, these courses emphasize practical application, assessment, and intervention to support students who struggle with reading.

early literacy strategies & intervention

Target Audience: Teacher candidates and certified teachers in early childhood and elementary education (Grades K–3)
Description: This 16-week course, ECE 308: Early Literacy Strategies & Intervention, prepares educators to teach foundational reading skills using the science of reading. Topics include phonemic awareness, decoding, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. Participants also explore literacy screening tools and develop intervention plans to support struggling readers, including those with characteristics of dyslexia. A pre-clinical field experience allows candidates to apply strategies in a classroom setting.

secondary literacy intervention

Target Audience: Teacher candidates and certified teachers in upper elementary, middle, and high school (Grades 4–12)
Description: This 16-week course, PED 307: Secondary Literacy Intervention, is designed for educators working with older students who need targeted literacy support. Participants learn how to apply the science of reading to content-area instruction and remediate gaps in foundational reading skills. Course topics include decoding, fluency, vocabulary, comprehension, and the use of assessment data to guide instruction. A pre-clinical experience provides opportunities for real-world application in secondary classrooms.

delivery format

Both micro-credentials are delivered through in-person learning, online coursework, assessments, and a required pre-clinical field experience in an approved educational setting. The structure allows for flexible learning while maintaining high academic and practical standards.

credit & recognition

Each micro-credential awards 3 hours of undergraduate credit and culminates in a digital badge issued through Credly. These badges recognize demonstrated competence in the science of reading and are valuable additions to professional portfolios and résumés.

enrollment

Enrollment is open to ORU teacher candidates as part of their degree programs and to certified educators seeking to enhance their literacy instruction. Interested participants must be currently enrolled at Oral Roberts Universty, meet course prerequisites, and be approved for pre-clinical field placement.
