1. Get familiar with the format.
ALEKS-PPL is not a multiple-choice test. It uses open-response questions and adaptive
technology to pinpoint exactly what you know and what you’re ready to learn next.
The test covers material from basic algebra through precalculus.
You can explore free videos and tutorials online about how the ALEKS-PPL system works
— simply search for “ALEKS math placement test tips” or visit:

2. Take your first assessment seriously.
There is no separate “practice test,” but most students treat their first attempt
as a low-stakes opportunity to get comfortable with the testing format. Your score
from this first attempt will unlock customized Learning Modules designed specifically
for you. These modules identify your strengths and target the exact topics you need
to review before your next attempt.
3. Use your personalized Learning Module.
After your first assessment, ALEKS automatically creates your Learning Module. Spending
time in this module is the best way to raise your placement score. A minimum of 3
hours of study in the module is required before retesting, and you must wait 7 days
between test attempts.
Your ALEKS subscription includes five total testing attempts over a 12-month period, so use your learning time strategically.
4. Review key skills.
Topics that frequently appear on the placement test include:
- Fractions, exponents, and radicals
- Linear and quadratic equations
- Rational expressions
- Functions and graphs
Trigonometric basics (for students aiming for Calculus placement)
5. Relax and do your best.
The assessment is untimed, and most students finish in about 75–90 minutes. Each question
builds on your previous responses, so give your best effort to help ALEKS find the
right placement for you.
If your first score isn’t where you’d like it to be, that’s okay — the ALEKS system is designed to help you improve!
