Social Security Information for International Students

A Social Security Number (SSN) is a nine-digit number issued by the Social Security Administration (SSA). It is essential for F-1 and M-1 students who have received employment authorization from USCIS. The SSN is used to track wages, Social Security benefits, and for identification purposes. You need an SSN if you plan to work in the United States.

ORU Work Requirement

To work on campus, you must have applied for a Social Security card. You can start working once you have submitted your Social Security receipt to the Student Employment Office. As an international student, you must provide a copy of your Social Security card within 45 days of receiving the receipt. It typically takes two weeks from the appointment date to receive your card. Once you have it, be sure to submit it immediately. If you haven’t received your card after two weeks, please reach out to the Student Employment Office at studentemployment@oru.edu.
