International Student Services
Resources and Services for International Students
As an international student in the United States, your F-1 visa grants you access to certain benefits, including the ability to obtain a driver’s license, a Social Security number, and permission to file for Curricular Practical Training (CPT) or Optional Practical Training (OPT). These benefits help you gain valuable experience, work authorization, and navigate your time in the U.S. successfully.
On this page, you’ll find all the information you need about these services and how to apply for them.
A Social Security number (SSN) is essential for students authorized to work in the
U.S. and is needed to report earnings, file taxes, and gain access to other benefits.
F-1 students who are granted work authorization must apply for an SSN. If you plan to drive in the U.S., you must apply for a driver’s license at your local
Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). A driver’s license is required by law to operate
a vehicle. International students who have worked or received income are required to file federal
and/or state taxes by April 15 each year. International students can request various official letters—such as for social security,
graduation, or visa renewal—from a DSO by completing the form, with delivery to their
ORU email. Students can pay their balance online through one-time payments, monthly plans, or
international transfers, as well as view statements and set up eRefunds for direct
deposit.
