Applying for OPT
Optional Practical Training (OPT) allows F-1 students to gain 12 months of temporary employment in a role directly related to their field of study. This is an excellent opportunity to gain hands-on experience after graduation.
A job offer is not required to apply for OPT. After completing a new degree program, you may be eligible for a new 12-month period of OPT at a higher educational level.
The Office of International Student Relations (ISR) recommends F-1 students for OPT, but USCIS (U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services) makes the final decision on approval. OPT is a benefit, not an entitlement, and ISR’s recommendation does not guarantee USCIS approval.
