Job Description

We are looking for a candidate with a positive, friendly disposition and the ability to communicate effectively with students, faculty, staff and guests. The ideal candidate is someone with strong organizational skills, flexibility and attention to details. The Student Loan Advisor position is responsible for preparing exit interviews for students graduating or withdrawing from the university and collecting on Perkins & Institutional Loans. This individual will effectively communicate financial information to students while maintaining the utmost confidentiality, compassion and desire to be a positive resources for our learning community.

Duties

  • Exit interview preparation for exiting students. This detailed process involves daily pulling exit interviews completed on-line from different websites. It also involves calling students, pulling/copying promissory notes and disclosure statements, and mailing exit packets. Must review references for complete and accurate information. Place and remove holds on academic records. Monitor exit packet materials and order supplies when necessary. 
  • Greet and assist students who come into the office. Make collection calls and return calls with regard to collection activities of Perkins and Institutional Loans via telephone contact and written correspondence. Research various avenues for valid phone numbers and addresses to aid in contacting borrower and return mail. Determine when accounts need to be placed with an outside collection agency.
  • Counseling and processing forbearances, deferments, cancellations and assisting with consolidations and/or rehabilitation of loans. Maintain name changes and update folders and promissory notes.
  • Run monthly past due reports for Perkins and Integrity Loans.  Review report and mail out letters to past due accounts.
  • Receive payments from borrowers via telephone, mail and in the office. Ensure accuracy of payments being posted to appropriate accounts. Complete daily deposits.
  • Assists with Registration by helping students with e-signatures on-line, reviewing entrance interview information and calling student or references if necessary for accurate information.
  • Maintain a current knowledge of federal regulations, credit bureau regulations (FTC) and privacy issues (FERPA).
  • Any other task deemed necessary according to management.

Requirements

EDUCATION:  

Requires a High School diploma or GED.

EXPERIENCE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:  

  • Requires two years of experience preferably in customer service, student loans, and/or collections. Prefer experience with the issuance and collections of Title IV Student Loans.  Knowledge of MS Excel and Word are essential.  Must be detailed oriented, have the ability to handle detailed work under stressful situations and to multi-task.  Good written and oral communication, math, organizational, and interpersonal skills are essential.  Must have the ability to collect by phone, handle stressful situations and be flexible in dealing with interruptions. 
  • Must maintain a high level of confidentiality of information.  
  • Maintains compliance with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) policy and its procedures.
