As an alumnus of Oral Roberts University, Dr. Matthew Goelzer returns to ORU after completing his doctorate at Boise State University where he conducted biomedical engineering research. While completing his doctorate at Boise State University Dr. Goelzer published multiple papers on how mechanical forces control bone development.

Dr. Goelzer’s research focus is on how mechanical forces such as gravity, strain, or vibration determine whether Mesenchymal Stromal Cells (MSCs) turn into bone forming cells called osteoblast cells or fat cells called adipocytes. Understanding the relationship between mechanical forces and MSCs downstream cell type will advance our medical treatment of aging populations and assist in human interplanetary space travel.

In the classroom Dr. Goelzer believes in educating the whole person, expanding each student’s ability to think with independence, innovation, and Holy Spirit inspiration. Dr. Goelzer’s education focus is on first-hand, real world experiences that encourage problem solving and innovative thinking. Ultimately, Dr. Goelzer strives to have each student leave ORU prepared for post-graduate education and private sector work.

Dr. Goelzer received his B.S. in Biology from Oral Roberts University, his Masters of Engineering and Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering from Boise State University. Dr. Goelzer serves as a full-time Assistant Professor of Biomedical Engineering at Oral Roberts University.
