Programs to Improve Energy Efficiency
- IT replaced multiple servers with Virtual servers, realizing 20% savings
- Hammer building site selection chosen to reduce costs of relocating utilities
- The light/heat and air systems in the Chapel building are on automated timer controls
- Dormitory stoves have timers installed to reduce energy and risk
- Sun Tubes/Skylights are utilized in 5 buildings
- Energy Recovery Units: air is pre-treated before it is heated or cooled, resulting in lower energy costs and better Indoor Air Quality due to creating positive pressure in buildings (which reduces outside contaminants).
- Air handling units in general have been updated to Energy Savings status
- Lighting retrofit throughout campus to T-8 and compact fluorescents and LED floods when applicable
- TPO (thermoplastic polyolefin) roofing membrane replaces all but one, Mineral Felt Roof products previously used on our flat roof buildings, reducing the heat island effect. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uh7k77XGYUY this process also redirects storm water more efficiently toward the roof drains, lowering risk of building damage.
- Citiplex building envelope restoration will soon be complete with a window sealing project reducing their energy costs
- Photovoltaic switches, dusk to dawn devices which save electricity, are used in remote lighting locations across campus
- Food Service offers Tray-less Tuesday to reduce water consumption
Recycling
Products recycled from campus include cooking oil, motor oil, newspapers, copier and printer cartridges, batteries, cardboard, plastics, aluminum and other metals, wood pallets, fluorescent lights, electronics, appliances, abandoned clothing, used mattresses and other furniture, and leftover paint and solvents.
Waste Reduction
- Chemistry Department transitioned to micro-scale experiments
- Biology/Chemistry Inventory Proctor identified and restructured storage and handling for all labs
- Biology replaced mercury thermometers
- Security is using bicycle patrols to reduce fuel waste and exhaust emissions
- Low flow aerators in all faucets, and shower head were retrofited in all dorms
- Food Service purchases prepackaged items to reduce waste.
- Managing demolition materials: we are repurposing salvaged materials or sometimes donate them.
