Gaining Work Experience Through CPT
Curricular Practical Training (CPT) allows international students to gain valuable off-campus work experience while studying full-time. It’s an excellent way to apply your education in a real-world setting and prepare for your next steps—whether pursuing Optional Practical Training (OPT), entering the workforce, or transitioning back home.
Key Facts About CPT
- You must complete one full year of study before starting CPT.
- CPT is the only legal way to work off-campus before graduating.
- Your CPT job must be directly related to your major and required for specific classes.
- As long as your CPT employment remains under 12 months of full-time work, it will not impact your eligibility for OPT.

- Employer Section
- Your employer must complete the first page.
- Indicate whether the position is part-time or full-time.
