Program Overview

Oral Roberts University offers a Bachelor of Music Education (B.M.E.) degree in Music Education which will equip you to become a Spirit-empowered classroom teaching professional. You will finish your degree confident with certification by the state of Oklahoma in K-12 education. You’ll choose a concentration in either vocal (MEVC) or instrumental (MEIC) music. You may earn licensure in a second subject area or earn both vocal and instrumental licensure.

Along with your choice of musical concentration, you will learn how to effectively manage a classroom and develop appropriate teaching, diagnostic, and rehearsal techniques. You will be skilled in the physiological and cognitive development of the K-12 learner which will equip you for teaching in private and public schools. Additionally, you will acquire an adequate background for further study in graduate schools.

You’ll be challenged to continuously grow your ability to perform. Ensemble concerts and student recitals are regularly presented with opportunities to appear as a soloist.

What makes ORU’s B.M.E. in Music Education program stand out?

The structure of the degree stimulates an appreciation and love for music through the study of various disciplines. Music is a socializing force and you will develop a compassionate understanding of yourself and your students through teaching music as self-expression. You will also have the opportunity to engage socially in the Collegiate Music Educators National Conference (CMENC). A great networking tool with all the music activities sponsored off and on campus.

Also, ORU became an All Steinway School in Spring 2011. 

What about accreditation?

As a university, we meet the accreditation standards set by the Higher Learning Commission (HLC). The ORU Music Department is an accredited institutional member of the National Association of Schools of Music (NASM) and is an American Music Therapy Association (AMTA) approved University.

Are there scholarships available?

Nearly 100% of our full-time, undergraduate residential students receive ORU grants and scholarships through academic achievement and through ORU’s premier scholarship opportunity of our Quest Whole Leader Scholarship.

DO I NEED TO AUDITION?

Admission to the music program requires an audition with the music department.
