Tulsa, Oklahoma, July 19, 2024— Oral Roberts University (ORU) played a key role in the new film Disciples in the Moonlight, which is in movie theaters nationwide from July 17th-24th. The soundscape for Disciples in the Moonlight was mixed and designed on the ORU campus by Nathan Ashton, ORU’s Senior Producer/Director of University Media Productions. The narrative of this film challenges viewers with the question, “What if the Bible was illegal?” prompting reflection on the present and future of religious freedom.

“The movie is genius and demanded quality,” said Ashton. “The sound rooms we used to create the film’s soundscape are the same facilities used by ORU’s Media Mastery Institute students. The facilities sound great. The resulting mix was so good that Director Brett Varvel decided not to send it to L.A. but opted to complete the theatrical mix at ORU.”

Students working in ORU’s MMI recording and editing audio ORU’s sound Foley Room and Audio Suite provide an ideal recording location for sound effects, voice-overs, and custom sound design.

The audio editing suite and re-recording rooms used for this project are part of ORU’s Media Mastery Institute, which provides advanced facilities for students to develop their skills. To further serve future filmmakers, ORU is opening the Peggy V. Helmerich Media Arts Center (MAC) this fall. In this new two-story, 74,000-square-foot building, film and media students will benefit from new digital production studios, AR/AV studios, and control rooms. The Center will also feature a close to 400-seat proscenium arched auditorium, a 100-seat music performance hall, and a 100-seat black box theater, all of which will serve dual purposes as teaching spaces. This construction, costing $38 million, will be completed debt-free and without the use of any tuition dollars.

“ORU’s Media Mastery Institute is designed to fully equip upperclassmen in the arts of media production,” said Dr. Norman Mintle, Professor/Associate Dean College of Arts & Cultural Studies. “We seek every opportunity to place our students in professional environments, such as the "Disciples in the Moonlight" film, to enhance their hands-on experiences gained here at ORU.”
