Tulsa, OK – Oral Roberts University was saddened to hear of the death of Dr. Vinson
Synan, a leading historian on the Holiness, Pentecostal, and Charismatic movements.
Synan published and edited over 25 books and is recognized for his work as an ambassador
and shepherd of the Charismatic movement during the 1970’s and 1980’s. His works include
The Holiness Pentecostal Movement in the United States, The Old-Time Power, and his

Over the last nearly four years, Synan served as a Scholar in Residence at ORU where
he worked closely with Dr. William M. Wilson, President of ORU and Global Co-Chair
of Empowered21. Before rejoining the faculty of ORU as Interim Dean of the College
of Theology and Ministry, Synan served as Dean of the School of Divinity at Regent

“Dr. Synan was a wealth of information with a tremendous amount of experience in the
significant faith movements of our time,” said Wilson. “He will be missed not only
for his knowledge but also his love and passion for the Word of God and its transforming
power through the work of the Holy Spirit. I was very honored to know him and share
his friendship. ORU, E21, and, the entire Christian world will miss this legend of
a man. Our prayers and love go out to his faithful wife, Carol, and to his entire
family. Vinson’s legacy will continue to bless millions of people for years to come.”
