Dr. Kathy Hoppe brings a wealth of academic and clinical experience to Oral Roberts University. She has taught at various universities, focusing on undergraduate and graduate programs in psychology and counseling, mentoring students for careers in mental health. Additionally, she is a Licensed Marital and Family Therapist with a diverse background in medical settings, group practices, and employee assistance programs. In 2022, Dr. Hoppe received recognition as an Oklahoma Health Care Hero by The Journal Record for her exceptional contributions toward making Oklahoma a healthier environment through her support, education, and counseling for medical professionals and educators during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Dr. Hoppe comes to ORU after three years at Rogers State University in Claremore, OK, where she was recognized for her work in building the graduate program in community counseling. As an assistant professor at RSU, Dr. Hoppe was known for engaging students in building theoretical knowledge, and practical application of counseling schools. She is a frequent contributor to continuing education and is known for her presentations on burnout, secondary trauma, trauma, supervision, and counseling ethics. Dr. Hoppe supervises candidates for marital and family therapist license in Oklahoma.

In the classroom, students state that Dr. Hoppe excels in diverse teaching methods while adapting her style to meet various student needs. She demonstrates respect and kindness, showing genuine care for student success by providing ample resources. Her engaging lectures, deep subject knowledge, and encouragement of participation simplify complex topics, making learning enjoyable and inclusive for all students. Dr. Hoppe’s students are fully aware of her devotion and passion for following Christ and following God’s will for their lives. She teaches students and others how to develop a career sustaining narrative based on Scripture and God’s calling.

Dr. Hoppe’s interest focuses on burnout, secondary trauma, and trauma and she has published numerous books on burnout, trauma, and educational theory. The American Academy of Experts in Traumatic Stress recognized Dr. Hoppe’s contributions by granting her the highest achievable designation of Fellow. Dr. Hoppe and co-author Dr. Michelle Taylor from Rogers State University have provided an introductory trauma textbook, Trauma and Crisis Counseling: An Overview for Emerging Professionals, published by Routledge.

Dr. Hoppe earned her B.A. in Psychology from the University of North Texas in Denton, Texas, her M.Div. from Golden Gate Baptist Theological Seminary (now Gateway Seminary) in California, D. Min. from Oral Roberts University, and Ed.D. in Community Care and Counseling with a trauma focus from Liberty University in Lynchburg, Virginia, receiving high distinction. Additionally, she has completed postgraduate training in marriage and family therapy.

As a dedicated member of her church, Dr. Hoppe takes on multiple roles, including community group leader, lay counselor supervisor, and board member of the lay counseling ministry. She is an ordained Baptist minister and has previously served as a hospice chaplain and interim pastor for congregations. Dr. Hoppe actively contributes to the community by providing pro bono counseling services to various individuals and organizations. She is involved in the Christian Association for Psychological Services, including a role as contributing editor to the CAPS Connect newsletter
