TULSA, Okla.—Oral Roberts University (ORU) was named the 2021 Global Vision Award Honoree by the Tulsa Global Alliance (TGA) at its annual Global Vision Awards Gala. The award recognized ORU as an organization fueling Tulsa’s global community and fostering international connections, partnerships, and citizen-to-citizen relationships.
“It is a tremendous honor for ORU to receive the Global Vision Award from Tulsa Global Alliance,” ORU Provost Dr. Kathaleen Reid-Martinez said. “At ORU, ‘global ties’ begin with our University motto: ‘Whole Leaders for the Whole World,’ and we challenge ourselves every day to fulfill this vision. It is significant to be selected among many tremendous globally-minded organizations in Tulsa, and we deeply appreciate TGA.”
ORU alumnus John Harper was also recognized at the gala as TGA’s Global Vision Individual award honoree for his citizen diplomacy and leadership work. Harper is a member of TGA’s Board of Directors and president of ORU’s Golden Eagle Athletic Club. ORU College of Arts & Cultural Studies faculty members, Dr. Marcela Chaván and Dr. Ruby Libertus, also currently serve on the TGA Executive Board and Board of Directors.
“In working with TGA,” ORU International Relations Professor Dr. Libertus said, “students have interacted with Iraqi students at Grand Lake and met international visitors at the airport. I recall one of my students, Hannah Patat, personally taking two dignitaries from Pakistan and India around town because they wanted to experience more of Tulsa.”
This award also recognizes ORU for contributing to Tulsa’s growth as an international community. ORU welcomes students from 126 countries and partners with institutions worldwide. For over a decade, ORU students have devotedly served as interns at TGA.
“Of our 4,753 students enrolled at the University this fall,” Dr. Reid-Martinez said, “789 students represent 126 different countries around the globe. These students bring unique perspectives, cultural traditions, and experiences that integrate and unify our learning community. This diversity reflects ORU’s mission ‘to develop Spirit-empowered leaders through whole person education to impact the world.’ It’s also inscribed as Global Engagement, one of our five key student learning outcomes.”
