ORU Model United Nations Team Wins Most Outstanding Delegation at Annual Conference

MUN wins
Tulsa, Oklahoma, July 14, 2025— Oral Roberts University’s (ORU) Model United Nations (MUN) team earned multiple awards at the 65th Midwest Model United Nations (MMUN) Conference, held in St. Louis, Missouri. ORU's two-team delegation, representing the nations of Japan and Lithuania, brought home a total of 14 awards, including Most Outstanding Delegation—the conference’s highest honor—for both teams.

“As leaders, we advocated for refugee rights, the protection of the environment, quality healthcare, and nuclear disarmament,” said Ruth Ann Celones, ORU’s Head Delegate. “In the divisive space of international affairs, we had the opportunity to be the hands and feet of Christ. ORU's victory means a lot to me because we need Spirit-empowered leaders within global policymaking.”

During the conference, students tackled global issues including disarmament in the age of technology, refugee crises, access to healthcare for marginalized populations, and international development goals. Delegates honed vital skills in diplomacy, cross-cultural communication, negotiation, public speaking, and critical thinking—while shining a light on ORU’s commitment to global engagement rooted in Christian values.

The team earned awards across multiple categories:

  • Most Outstanding Delegation (top honor overall) for both teams, Japan and Lithuania
  • Most Outstanding Delegation in Committees (first place across committee sessions)
  • Best in Plenary Crisis
  • Best in Position Paper
  • Delegates’ Choice Awards
  • Distinguished Delegation Awards in Committees (second place honors)

“MUN was an incredible experience,” said ORU’s Co-Head Delegate, Isabel Varela, “that not only deepened my understanding of global issues but also opened my heart to discovering what God has called me to do. It helped me develop my leadership skills, resilience, and character, making me a more well-rounded and confident individual.”

ORU has maintained a long-standing tradition of excellence at MMUN, attending annually and consistently returning with recognition for its exceptional performance. Under the guidance of Faculty Advisor Dr. Ruby Libertus, students who participate in ORU’s MUN team develop skills in global citizenship and ethical leadership.

“We have been winning awards and competing against tough competition for years now,” said Dr. Libertus. “These students have had the opportunity to hone their craft, become better informed on global issues, be more persuasive, and become better leaders of tomorrow. Thanks to the delegates for representing ORU and their countries. For the next conference, we will be representing Finland and South Korea.”

Preparations are already underway for the 66th MMUN Conference, set for February 18–21, 2026, with themes focusing on global entrepreneurship, sustainable development, and international peace and security. Students from all majors are encouraged to join us.
