sthill@oru.edu TAMPA, FL — SHAPE America Southern District announced today that Terry Shannon, Ph.D.,
Program Director of Sport Management at Oral Roberts University (ORU) in Tulsa, OK,
was the recipient of the 2019 Sport Professional of the Year award.
The award honors outstanding leaders in the professional domain of sport in SHAPE
America Southern District. Shannon received the award during the Southern District
Awards Luncheon at the 2019 SHAPE America National Convention & Expo in Tampa, FL.
In addition to working as an associate professor and Program Director of Sport Management
at ORU, Shannon has served as a council member, board member and President of the
Oklahoma Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance (OAHPERD).
He was instrumental in creating and growing the sports management and athletics strands
of OAHPERD’s annual convention and helped develop OAHPERD to be a more visible and
diverse organization.
“Due to Terry’s efforts, not only is OAHPERD more diverse and visible, but they are
also continuing to meet the needs of their professionals and future professionals
across the state,” said Donna Dunaway, executive director of SHAPE America Southern
District. “This is why SHAPE America Southern District is pleased to present the 2019
Sport Professional of the Year Award to Terry Shannon.”
“I would like to thank ORU and our students,” said Shannon. “This is a team award.
ORU has allowed us to think outside the box with our sport management program, and
our students have embraced the hands-on learning approach we have designed.”
