Music Composition and Film Scoring
Oral Roberts University’s Bachelor of Music (B.M.) in Music Composition program empowers you to express and develop your creative talents and abilities. As you are challenged to continuously grow in aptitude, you’ll amplify the unique expression and understanding of your role as a Spirit-empowered artist in today’s world!
You will have the opportunity to choose one of three concentrated areas. The Composition Emphasis provides focus on the organization of musical ideas into a logical and homogenous form. You will engage in musical craftsmanship to create original small forms in classical chamber music and jazz. Styles and techniques of 20th century music will be explored. Several semester projects will allow you to compose pieces using as least three instruments with applied techniques.
The Music Production Emphasis engages you in an in-depth study of concepts, equipment and techniques in the modern electronic music studio. You will explore most aspects of MIDI as well as music software, current trends, power user techniques, hardware, notation, sequencing, film scoring and much more.
With the Film Scoring Emphasis, you’ll gain the knowledge and skills to create original music to accompany film, video games, commercial, and digital media. Practical instruction includes music theory, history, and fundamental compositional mastery. You will gain experience through Orchestration for Film and opportunities to score student film projects.

What about accreditation?
As a university, we meet the highest accreditation standards set by the Higher Learning Commission (HLC). And the ORU Music Department is an accredited institutional member of the National Association of Schools of Music (NASM). And ORU is an American Music Therapy Association (AMTA) approved university.
Are there scholarships available?
Nearly 100% of our full-time, undergraduate residential students receive ORU grants and scholarships through academic achievement and through ORU’s premier scholarship opportunity of our Quest Whole Leader Scholarship.
